What is the Nalandabodhi community?

Vancouver Study Group

Membership in Nalandabodhi is based on one’s heart connection to our teacher, The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche. Both formal and informal students can engage in the activities of the community. Nalandabodhi enables students to learn and experience the three wheels of study, meditation practice, and activity as individuals within a community under the guidance of The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche.

We are deeply connected by our common goal to achieve liberation from suffering, for ourselves and others, and therefore our community is fertile ground for applying our Mahayana intentions. In keeping with the teachings of the Buddha, with our teacher’s instructions, and with our own natural sense of bodhichitta, it is our aspiration to foster an environment of loving kindness and compassion within our community relationships.

What does a formal teacher–student relationship with The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche entail?

Montreal Study Group

A formal student has formally made a request to, and has been accepted by, The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche to be their spiritual teacher. They will receive Rinpoche’s guidance in the three wheels of study, meditation practice, and activity. Rinpoche’s formal students commit to engaging in these three wheels.

A formal student may choose to be a full member or a contributing member of Nalandabodhi. A contributing member participates according to his/her level of interest and/or available time and is not committing to the requirements of full membership. A new student would maintain contributing membership status for a provisional period of six months.

What is an informal teacher–student relationship with The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche?

An example of an informal teacher–student relationship is a student who participates in a study group, open retreats or teachings, but who has not made a formal request to be a student of Rinpoche. An informal student can maintain an ongoing, supportive relationship with Nalandabodhi by participating as a contributing member.

What are some of the benefits of membership in Nalandabodhi?

Nalandabodhi full members receive support and guidance with their practice and study journeys and have an ongoing relationship with a practice instructor. Full members may apply to Nalandabodhi Sangha Retreat and attend restricted programs appropriate to their level of practice. They receive free tuition for all Hinayana-Mahayana curriculum classes, discounts on specified programs, and a free subscription to Bodhi magazine. Full members receive a Nalandabodhi membership pin.

Nalandabodhi contributing members receive guidance with their practice and study journeys, including access to practice instruction as desired. They have access to nonrestricted study and practice materials appropriate to their study and practice level. They also receive Nalandabodhi informational materials, announcements, and a free subscription to Bodhi magazine.
